AnyMind vs Logseq

Two local-first outliners that take memory seriously — one built around your file system and a plugin ecosystem, one built around opening a browser tab and typing. A factual comparison from people who have genuinely lived in both.

Full disclosure first: Logseq is one of the tools we used most before building AnyMind — one of us spent years in it. It is open source, principled about data ownership, and loved by its community for good reasons. If this page reads like a comparison between two siblings, it is.

Where the two tools agree

  • Local-first conviction. Both believe edits should commit on your device first and that your notes should outlive any vendor.
  • The outline as foundation. Both are block-based outliners with infinite nesting, zoom, and keyboard-driven editing.
  • Memory is a feature. Both ship flashcards natively rather than treating remembering as someone else's problem.

The core difference: a system vs an appliance

Logseq is a system. Your graph lives as Markdown (or Org-mode) files in a folder you control. There are backlinks, block references, Datalog queries, whiteboards, themes, and a large plugin ecosystem. You can shape it into almost anything — and shaping it is part of the deal: choosing sync, picking plugins, maintaining the configuration as versions evolve.

AnyMind is an appliance. You open a URL, sign in, and the entire feature set is already wired: tree editing, zoom, full-text search, inline todos, and FSRS-scheduled review. There is nothing to install, no plugin to choose, and multi-device sync is simply how it works. The trade is real: you get far fewer knobs. We think most people thinking-in-outlines are better served by zero knobs — that opinion is the product.

Files vs portability

Logseq's plain-text storage is its deepest strength: your notes are readable by any editor, greppable, version-controllable. If plain files are a hard requirement, Logseq wins this section outright.

AnyMind stores the tree in a synced database with local-first semantics and a standing JSON export. You keep the exit door — but the working copy is not a folder of files. What you get in exchange is sync without setup and an outline that behaves identically on every device.

Flashcards: both have them, differently

Logseq lets you tag a block as a card and reviews it in-app — genuinely useful, and ahead of most tools. AnyMind's review layer differs in three ways: cards are scheduled by FSRS as a core primitive; the review queue and the roam shuffle mode are first-class surfaces rather than a page of query results; and because sync is built in, your due cards follow you to any device with zero configuration. Where Logseq is ahead

  • Open source. Auditable, forkable, community-governed. AnyMind is not.
  • Plain-text files you own at the byte level, friendly to git and grep.
  • Backlinks, block references, queries, whiteboards — a far larger feature surface for networked-thought workflows.
  • Plugins and themes. If you enjoy building your tool, Logseq is a workshop; AnyMind deliberately is not.
  • Price. Logseq's core is free; AnyMind's Pro is $4.99/month (the free plan covers the full outliner).
